Mahashivratri is a significant festival in the Hindu religion and is celebrated for several reasons. The festival has both religious and cultural significance.

The primary significance of Mahashivratri is that it celebrates the marriage of Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati. According to Hindu mythology, Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati got married on this day. The festival is therefore celebrated as a day of union, of the divine masculine and feminine energies.

Mahashivratri is also significant because it is believed to be the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava dance, a cosmic dance that represents creation, preservation, and destruction. It is said that on this night, Lord Shiva reveals himself to his devotees in his most benevolent and powerful form.

Another significance of Mahashivratri is that it marks the overcoming of darkness and ignorance. The festival is celebrated during the darkest night of the month, and it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.
Some say that on this day Bhagwan Shiv gets up from his "Dhayan" on Mt  Kailash.

And this day becomes a special one because of a  significant change in the cosomic forces. On this day the planetary pull surges up and the whole universe radiates or emits energy in upward direction, thus forming the shape of something resembling to a huge shiv Lingam.
People who worship Bhagwan Shiv (Sadakhs) sit for vigil through the whole night do rigours  Dhayan and worship the Bhagwan. At the Dawn of other day they break their pursuit and offer thr sacramentals to the Shiva lingam.
